Catholic Radio Awareness Day

Sunday, June 8, is Pentecost Sunday – the day when the church celebrates the gift of the Holy Spirit.

This year, to mark the 15th anniversary of Spirit Catholic Radio, the Nebraska bishops have declared June 8 Catholic Radio Awareness Day. It’s an opportunity to celebrate Catholic radio and the benefits of being able to hear the word of God over the airwaves.

Jim Carroll, executive director of Spirit Catholic Radio, said Pentecost Sunday is a perfect opportunity to celebrate Spirit Catholic Radio, which is broadcast throughout Nebraska and western Iowa, because “we are a Holy Spirit-driven apostolate.”

To mark the celebration, Spirit Catholic Radio is asking parishes across the listening area – in the Archdiocese of Omaha, Diocese of Lincoln and Diocese of Grand Island – to help people become aware of Catholic radio and the benefits of Catholic radio. Parishes also are invited to include an insert in their bulletin that has programming information as well as information about why people should listen to Catholic radio.

“St. Jerome said ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ,” Carroll said.

Through our local and national programming, listeners have a chance to learn Scripture, as well as hear music, national call-in programs, local news and events, devotions, reflections, local priests and guests, prayers, messages from Nebraska’s three bishops and coverage of the pope’s international activities. All of these programs help listeners learn the faith, Carroll said.

“People need to know the faith to live the faith,” he said.

Spirit Catholic Radio also wants people to invite others to listen to Catholic radio by displaying Spirit Catholic Radio yard signs of putting a sticker on their vehicle window or bumper. Yard signs will be available after Pentecost Sunday Masses at several churches, and the station recently mailed 20,000 vehicle stickers to families in Nebraska and Iowa.

Yard signs and vehicle stickers are simple ways to evangelize and share the Gospel message, Carroll said.

Upcoming contest

Later this month, during our three days of music and our summer appeal – June 24-26 – Spirit Catholic Radio will have a fun vehicle sticker contest.

Throughout those three days, we will have six stop-off locations each day – two days in Omaha and one in Lincoln – where our Spirit vans and tents will be set up during the morning, lunch and evening drive times. People with Spirit Catholic Radio stickers on their vehicles will be invited to stop by, enjoy some food and enter to win prizes. If you don’t have a sticker, you can stop by and our “interns on the loose” will place one on your vehicle and you’ll also be entered to win.

If you can’t stop by, but want to participate, you can post on our Facebook page a photo of your Spirit Catholic Radio yard sign in front of your house and get prize entries that way. More details to follow.

The prizes will include overnight stays at seven fantastic hotels in our listening area that can be used anytime in the next 12 months.

Yard signs and vehicle stickers are simple ways to promote Catholic radio and help others evangelize the life-giving and saving message of Jesus Christ. We hope you’ll participate.
